Given the size of my flist, I doubt anyone will actually read this, but nonetheless:

Thoughts on the new government in the UK

I'm actually really excited, even though my preference would have been for Labour to win the election. Well, actually, my real preference would have been for the Lib Dems to have won it, but my realistic preference would have been Labour.

Having said that, the Con-Lib coalition feels like the start of a new era, and I really hope it works. I think it's high time politics here became more collaberative and less adversarial, and this could be the start of that. Some of the more stupid policies by each of the parties have been weeded out already, including the Tory inheritance tax threshold increase and the Lib Dems' poorly thought-through mansion tax. I'm glad Labour couldn't form a coalition; I think it's right that the party with the most seats in the House of Commons and the highest proportion of the vote gets to govern, and I wonder if this is part of the reason that the Labour party was so half-arsed in its coalition talks; from various leaks, it seems as if many of them felt they simply didn't have the right.

I fully expected a Conservative minority government, with support from the Lib Dems for the Queen's Speech and the Budget to ensure another election didn't need to be called right away. In the unlikely event of a coalition, I expected the Lib Dems to get a maximum of two Cabinet seats, and I expected them to be rubbish ones. I never dreamed that Nick Clegg could become Deputy Prime Minister and that four other seats would go to Lib Dems. David Cameron should be given credit for his obvious commitment to a proper coalition; he's always said that he favoured a less adversarial style of politics and it seems he's putting his money where his mouth is.

There's no reason that a coalition government shouldn't work here; they're common across much of the rest of Europe. We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but for the moment, I'm optimistic for the future.
